No-Poo Intro
I decided to start by switching my regular washings from shampoo and conditioner to baking soda and apple cider vinegar. Hopefully needing to wash it less frequently. From what I've read, it sounds like how much you use, and even how you apply it vary for different people. but a few things remain the same:
- It is better to use a natural, high-quality baking soda. I am using the rest of the Arm and Hammer that I have left, but if I continue to use it in my hair, I plan on buying one like Bob's Red Mill Pure Baking Soda. It's available at most grocery stores.
- Use apple cider vinegar that is raw, unfiltered, and has the mother. It's not expensive and easy to find. I picked up a small bottle at my local health food store.
- You can put it directly on your hands, massaging it onto your scalp, or you can mix it with water. If you put it in water, most people use about 1-2 Tablespoons in a cup of water. It's not an exact science though. It's used to absorb dirt and oil from your scalp and roots, so that's where you'll want to apply it. Also make sure you rinse well afterwards, to make sure you get it all.
- You do have to dilute the ACV, but the ratio is up to you, as long as it is less than a 50/50 ratio. You want less vinegar than water in the solution. The ACV acts as a conditioner, so you want to focus on the ends of your hair when you apply it and be sure to rinse all of it out as well.
I'm currently on day three after washing with baking soda and ACV and it's going well, but there's not much to report. I'm going to give it some time and then write about it. Just for reference, I have long, straight, somewhat thick, low-porosity hair. If you are wondering what porosity is, or how to find out how porous your hair is, read more about it here. If you have any questions or advice for me, please feel free to leave a comment!
[I just want to mention that this isn't necessarily meant to be a super informative post about the No-Poo method. For now I'm just wanting to share and document my journey. I'm hoping to provide information for people who are curious about it, interested in trying it, or are already transitioning and want to see how others are going about it. As I learn more I may come back later and edit this post to have more specifics, but for now it's just a brief overview.]
